Delicious in Singapore

4 nights in Singapore during Chinese New Year – Year of the Fire Horse. Restaurants were very busy with celebrants enjoying Yu Sheng, a must have salad that involved the whole table standing and tossing the ingredients high in the air to bring good fortune.

We maybe would have done better if we’d planned in advance but we had some great food anyway.

We started with La Pau Sat, at 130 years it is the oldest Hawkers Centre in Singapore with 69 food stalls and 8 satay stands outside on Satay Street.

The prawn satay were delicious. 2 SGD a piece.

We added a vegetable biryani, some paneer tikka and the biggest naans I’ve ever seen.

Tips on Hawkers Centres. Bring some cash, not all vendors accept credit cards. Bring tissue packets to save your table and wet wipes to wipe up the table first and after. You must clean up when your finished or you could face a fine.

Raffles Long Bar – No trip to Singapore would be complete without a visit to the home of the Singapore Sling. In 1915 ladies weren’t allowed to drink alcohol so the bartender created a drink that looked like a fruit juice. At 42 SGD, it’s the most expensive cocktail I’ve ever had. Bags of peanuts are on every table are included and you get to toss the shells on the floor or maybe enjoy tossing a few at your favourite person.

Dinner at Ce La Vie is one of the ways you get access to Level 57 at Marina Bay Sands Hotel. The food wasn’t fantastic. I really liked the tempura flower tempura with wasabi aioli and the turmeric foam on the miso eggplant was the best flavour of the meal. The halibut was blah, it’s hard to impress someone from British Columbia with halibut. David really liked the truffle risotto. The shimeji mushrooms were really good.

Violet Oon Singapore is rooted in Peranakan heritage blending Chinese, Indian and Malaysian flavours. We couldn’t get a reservation at the National Gallery location so tried Dempsey Hill, a former British Army Barracks now featuring hip, upscale food and entertainment .

The room was warm and inviting.

We both loved the Gado Gado. It doesn’t look exciting. Boiled potatoes, steamed cabbage and green beans with tempeh, fried bean curd, cucumber and boiled potatoes don’t sound like much but add the sweet and tangy peanut sauce and your hooked. I’m already working on my recipe.

Gado Gado

Cod in creamy laksa sauce and sambal eggplant were both very good.

The service started out very good but descended into chaos before we finished. I think the National Gallery location would have been the better of the two.

We still had chili crab to try and we were having trouble getting a reservation. Our concierge suggested a place frequented by locals No Signboard Seafood Restaurant on Geylang Road. It was an experience. At one point a car drove through the restaurant, to a parking lot out back.

No signboard Restaurant

There are no pictures of the chili crab, it isn’t an attractive dish and looked daunting when it arrived. Large bibs and plastic gloves were provided. If we ever go back I’m trying white pepper crab, many people told us it was their favourite. I think I’d prefer it.

We did manage to guzzle down a plate of prawn chips and chili sauce and some other mystery snack before we even saw the crab.

Shrimp Chips with Chili Sauce and Tasty Crispy Mystery Snacks

We went to visit the Budda Tooth Relic Museum. It was right behind the Chinatown Complex Hawkers Centre. Trenganu St, a historic pedestrian street runs right between them and is full of multi cultural stores and food stalls. We had excellent samosas and I discovered that I love coconut water.

Food is a big part of travel and Singapore offers everything 165 Michelin Selected affordable restaurants to 3 Michelin 3 Stars options. It’s a fascinating place and I’d love to return someday.

Montage Los Cabos 3 nights of fabulous food.

We spent 3 nights at the Montage Los Cabos, an ultra luxury resort in Mexico. Our room was beautiful and full of delightful treats.

Fruit tray refreshed daily.
Make your own margarita and guacamole kits.

We went all in with the Agave Experience and learned a lot about tequila tasting five different styles paired with creative bites including crispy scorpions, a tasty, salty snack.

Scorpions and Tequila

They have 3 great restaurants: Talay, with Thai food; Mezcal, featuring gourmet Mexican food; and Marea, Mediterranean seafood in a beachfront setting.  A 4th night would have presented a quandary.  I loved all 3.

Talay at Montage Los Cabo

Our first dinner was at Talay. I loved the setting under the trees and string lights.

Two highlights were the pad Thai and the whole deep fried fish. The ceviche and poached lobster were great too. A very green vegetable curry wasn’t pretty but surely the best vegetable curry I’ve ever tasted.

The pad Thai was not only delicious but beautifully presented. Check out what looks like a basket covering the pad Thai. Start tossing, add the lime and peanuts. The grilled prawns take it up a notch or so.

Pad Thai

The whole deep fried fish was my favourite. I didn’t like sharing.

Whole Crispy Fish & Chili

Coconut Ice Cream with traditional Thai Toppings and Fried Bananas with Sesame Ice Cream were both very popular.

Talay would be a contender for a 4th night visit.

Our next dinner was at Mezcal. I’ve loved Mexican food since the first taco at some through in California in the 70’s. No comparison to this meal. I think my palette has matured.

Organic Tomatoes, Watermelon and Poblano Peppers.

The ceviche was almost too beautiful to toss and eat.

I’m crazy about Mole and once thought I’d make it at home. Then I found out about the 26+ ingredients. This corn tamal doesn’t look that pretty but tit tasted great. The mole was so good I was finger licking the plate.

Chocolate clams are native to the Sea of Cortez, large, sweet and tender served with creamy rice, lemon aioli and purslane. Yums Up!

Clam Rice

The set menu featured beef tenderloin this sea bass replacement made me very happy.

.

I didn’t try the wafer and vanilla parfait but I recognized the white chocolate tacos from our Agave Tasting Experience and couldn’t resist.

Layers of wafers and ice cream,

Our final dinner was at Marea, overlooking the beach. Any dinner that starts with a seafood tower is going to make me happy. There was a lot more to love in this meal.

I will be making the roasted tomato and feta at home. Simply delicious.

Roasted Tomatoes with Feta and Tapenade

Branzino is a popular in Vancouver. They aren’t all created equal. This was perfect.

Grilled Whole Branzino with Beurre Blanc

The lobster wasn’t overcooked. Nothing else needs to be said. Craveable.

Lobster Risotto

Dessert’s not my thing but I heard lots of murmers of approval.

All 3 restaurants were excellent but Mezcal would win if I had another night. Mexican food this sophisticated is not easy to find. I was especially impressed with the regional Mexican wine pairings and the 2 moles.

Riverside Luxury Cruises Mozart on the Danube

Butter and Tapenade

Butter became a thing on our Riverside cruise. There was a big wooden tub of farmer’s butter at the end of the bread counter, the nightly featured butter and then the new favourite, bread & butter with blue cheese, a revelation suggested by Alexa helping at the cheese counter one day.

We spent 13 nights on Mozart over the Christmas and New Year’s holidays 2025 & 2026. Starting in Vienna, a wonderland at Christmas with beautifully decorated markets full of handcrafts, delicious food and drink around every corner.

The ship is double the width of most riverships and can only be accommodated on the Danube. That double width means a much bigger kitchen. They use that space to create the best food I’ve ever had on a river.

My first meal on the Mozart has led to an obsession.  We arrived late, unpacked and crashed without supper.  I only eat breakfast when travelling and my favourite indulgence has always been crab benedict, rarely seen, rarely perfected, it’s now in my rearview.  Shakshuka is my new love.

Breakfast is buffet style at Waterside Restaurant.  Hungry after the missed dinner I enjoyed checking the options and came upon a big pan of Shakshuka with a bowl of tiny red pepper rings to add pizzazz.   Eggs in a rich tomato sauce, traditionally baked with a soft yolk.  I’ve tried to make this at home and could not get the eggs right.  These were poached in the sauce. I’ve tried. It works.

The breads and croissants were freshly made, the croissant exploded perfectly.

Lunch was again buffet style with great daily changing hot specials, lots of salads and soups, fresh bread and an excellent cheese counter.  Desserts and ice cream were getting rave reviews.

On a galley tour we learned that everything is made from fresh ingredients and the soups all start from a vegan stock.

There were 4 of us dining every night and we never had one bad meal. The breads even more irresistible with nightly changing butters and spreads.

This tuna appetizer my favourite appetizer.

Tuna Mosaic

Chef Johannes has an excellent touch with fish and seafood. There was something tempting every night. The always available salmon entree was so good I had a hard time not ordering it more often.

Scallops and Prawns with Sweet Potato and Spatzel

The kitchen went all out on New Year’s Eve with a multi course menu that took our personal preferences into account and allowed us to simply indulge and celebrate.

Lobster is our favourite NYE meal and it was perfect. Rumour has it the filet mignon was equally good. I had double lobster.

Cathy approving the NYE lobster.

Riverside Mozart has an exceptional culinary program. The wines are very good. A wine tour to Schloss Gobelsburg was one of the best.

Thanks to Peter behind the bar for great cocktails.

The entertainment excellent.

Hats off to Riverside Mozart for the best river cruise I’ve experienced.
