11th Annual Okanagan Wine Tour

For our 11th annual Okanagan wine tour we decided to head north to Kelowna and Lake Country.

It was the worst weather we have ever had.

Our 1st stop was Fitzpatrick Vineyards at Greata Ranch to try the award-winning sparkling wines.  I bought all 3 and look forward to toasting life with them.  The winery is beautiful and they have a restaurant with a fantastic view of the lake.

At Quails’ Gate we did a tasting before lunch.  Their Pinot Noir is a star.  Lunch was a little uneven but the parmesan fries are still delicious, the mussels perfect and a grilled halloumi was outstanding.

The Hatch was our next stop.  It’s a happening place with lots of young people having a good time.

I didn’t like any of the wines, though I think they have some good ones not available to taste.

Our final stop of the day was at Beaumont Estate Winery.  One of our group rightly loves the rose.  We had such a good time there.  They have a set up with drums a stand-up base and a guitar.  The owner played guitar, I got my bongo mojo going and Shirley sang and danced.  A first for a wine tasting experience.  We had a great time.

Our final stop was our 3-bedroom cottage at Falcon Point, Predator Ridge and made dinner at home to enjoy with some of the great wines we had picked up.

Day 2 started at Mission Hills for a Reserve tour and tasting.  The tour and tasting were great and the winery and art collection are fantastic.  Great wines and the best gift shop I’ve ever seen in a winery.

We headed back across the lake and stopped at Tantalus.  Sadly they were sold out of almost everything.  I bought some reisling and pinot noir, both signature grapes.

We did a tasting and lunch at the newly renovated Cedar Creek.  It will be absolutely fantastic when completed.  The new restaurant Home Block had just opened the day before but it was flawless.  The French fries were fantastic and the calamari the best I’ve ever tasted.

Our final stop was Sperling Vineyards.  A nice simple tasting room with some exceptional reislings.

Day 3 we started in Lake Country at Ex Nihilo, pretty fine Pinot Noir, a bit young to be released, in my opinion but I think it will be delicious in a few years.

Next, Intrigue Wines.  Another fantastic gift shop and some of the best value wines in the Okanagan.  I’m drinking a glass of their Riesling right now.  It gulpable.

Then Gray Monk for tasting and lunch.  Terribly slow service at the Lookout Restaurant and OK food.

Final stop Arrowleaf Cellars, they keep winning awards but I’ve never been and still am not a fan.

After a break we took advantage of 50th Parallel’s complimentary shuttle from Predator.  What a beautiful winery and Block One restaurant.  Lots of great art, super tasting.  I didn’t love the pizza but they have a fabulous forno and the warm olives and broccolini, done gomae style was great.

And so another Okanagan wine tour ends.

Rainy Saturday morning

7:45 Workout done.  Coffee in hand.  Nothing I HAVE  to do until afternoon.

A lighter workout this morning.  15 minutes bike but no sprints and no weights.

We had dinner at Lin’s last night and though I love their hand made noodles and the honey prawns are amazing, the Tan Tan soup wasn’t the best.  Peaceful may be.  We’re going to have to try them all again soon.  A week of Tan Tan.  Chongqing’s sauce is sometimes fantastic and sometimes too hot and they don’t make the noodles.  Peaceful adds some nice crispy tofu.

The Bok Choy with 2 kinds of mushrooms was pretty great.

At The Travel Group’s Friday Winedown we opened a bottle of Sandhill 2011 Cabernet Merlot from Vanessa Vineyards and it disappeared so fast I barely tasted it.  We toured the vineyard just before they picked the grapes so I’m quite partial to the wine.

I ate 2,700 calories yesterday.

Saturday morning and it’s a winter wonderland

I love Saturday morning workouts, there’s no rush, the day seems endless ahead.  15 minutes bike ride with 2 – 2 minute sprints.  Lots of physical work ahead around the house and I love it after a week of sitting at my desk.  I counted my workouts this year and I’m up to 134.

Friday is always an eating and drinking day with lunch and dinner often a challenge. Yesterday I made grilled cheese on Pure Breads Old Stumpie Rye with grated 2 year old PEI cheddar and Maasdam.  The George Foreman grill at work is one of our most useful appliances.

Winedown at The Travel Group can be quite an affair this time of year and this week I had some leftover Hinterland Rose and wanted to see how it had held up for 5 days.  That lead to picking up some Oyama Truffled Duck Breast Salami. Available for a limited time each year, it’s perfect for starting a party with sparkling wine.

A match made in heaven and the wine held up well with a proper stopper and refrigeration.

We’re also helping Les Amis du Fromage finish a wheel of Pepper D’Affinois so opened a bottle of Syrah from Vanessa Vineyards by Sandhill.  That was a pretty fine match up too.

Dinner was curry from Desi Turka so I went hunting for a riesling and found this Orofino 2013 Old Fines . Pale gold colour, heady aroma, mouth watering and enough acid to cut through the curries.  Saved some for a repeat performance.

I ate about 2,800 calories yesterday.

Friday and I’ve had a great workout week

Biked for 15 minutes this morning, only 2 sprints but 1 was 2 minutes and the other 1.5 minutes.  Also did some core work and yoga stretches.

Dinner at home was left over ravioli and salad.

We opened a bottle of Sandhill Vanessa Vineyards Merlot.  Nice colour and aroma and lots of fruit.  There’s a half left for tonight and I’m interested to see how it holds up.

I ate 2,100 calories yesterday.

The Mexican On Granville is my kind of joint

No workout this morning but I made up for it with gardening yesterday and getting ready for company tonight.

We went to one of our favourite events last night, Barney Bentall’s Grand Cariboo Opry fundraiser in support of the Potluck Cafe. Held at The Voque, which automatically means eat at The Mexican.  The food is great, the people are great, the margarita’s too.  Nachos are a must and the crispy cheese on the top can be ordered as a stand alone dish cause there’s never enough.  David always has the chili rejjeno and I can convince him to share with a Taco camaron.  I love The Mexican, it’s what I’d call a joint;  clean linoleum floors with chrome chairs, good food fast and a good bar. No one ever rushes you even though there is a queue out the door.  Good manners make you move along at a proper pace.

I was trying all day ato save my calories for last night when David opened a bottle of Le Vieux Pin Equinox Syrah and it was beautiful AND we had a designated driver.  Hallelujah!

I figured I ate about 3,000 calories.

Jackson Triggs Sunrock Vineyards are always excellent. The ’06 Merlot was no exception.

10 minutes biking plus some core work; a light workout was called for this morning, my knee was aching from the squats and gardening yesterday. I got the old heard pumping with some raking so that burned some extra calories.

I ate about 2,300 calories yesterday.  Dinner at home; bucatini with white anchovies and capers and coleslaw. I used rustichella d’abruzzo bucatini, it’s my favourite brand and I love the fat chewy noodles.  The salty anchovies and capers with peppers and olive oil make this my kind of dish,  David hates the pasta and white anchovies so I won’t be tempted to make it too often. Probably for the best.  As for the coleslaw, I learned that I don’t like savoy cabbage if it isn’t cooked.  It was such a nice looking cabbage, I was looking forward to eating it, but it should have been a stir fry.

We opened a bottle of Jackson Triggs SunRock Vineyards 2006 Merlot and it was beautiful.  Colour and cork were still good, aroma was rich, the fruit was still lively and mouth feel was velvet.  A cellaring that paid off.
